Will I lose weight w/ belly dancing If I just use many belly dance dvds?

27th June

I live in a small town so they don’t offer any kind of classes but I really want to learn to belly dance and I also want to lose weight. Is this a good idea or is there another I can do this? Thanks.

Belly dance can be great exercise and great for muscle tone, but to lose weight, you ultimately need cardio.
As learning belly dance is not always high-level and consistent enough cardio to lose weight, I would suggest combining that will 30 minutes of high-speed walking or other cardio activity at least 5 days a week for best results.

Learning to dance without lessons?

20th June

I’ve danced for about a year in total, but I’ve stopped because the studio I was in was not teaching me a thing first of all. Also, to get better I would have to take many classes, and I don’t have that money. I was just reminded though of how badly I want to be a dancer though. I want to be able to do things that are beautiful, not just stand and do tendus for an hour.

What are ways to learn dance without formal classes, at least just to be my muscles strong for when I get back into a studio? Are there DVDs teaching ballet? Any ideas?

You can’t really learn the technique of dance without a proper /formal class. Many studios also offer trial classes for free, or just cheaper classes, try taking one and see which teaching style you like the best. Also, if you think normal classes are too easy go to a prestigious dance studio and take an advanced class, it will probably include more moves and go at a faster pace. But if you really are keen to learn dance at home just get a DVD made by a professional. But you won’t be able to correct yourself because you don’t know the correct technique. DVDs are okay if you are looking at dance just as a hobby, but if you want to do it professionally than you MUST take classes to perfect your technique. And if you don’t have the money for classes then make it! What I mean by that is if every morning you stop by Starbucks for a coffee, and eat lunch out everyday, thats about $105 per week. Just pack your lunch and coffee and use the money for dance classes. Think about it, which will benefit you most?

Looking for Dance dvds?

Anyone know some good Dance dvds? I don’t really want to learn how to dance, I just want to dance for fun. So I’m looking for something for exercise, preferably with popular music.

Here are some suggestions I found on Discount Dance…
- Breakin’ It Down with Laurie Ann Gibson
- Off Da Hook Hip Hop Aerobics
- So You Think You Can Dance Get Fit: Tone and Groove
- How to Dance Like a Pop Star
- Hip Hop Fuzion

Can anyone recommend any *good* ballroom dance DVDs?

15th June

I want to learn dancing as quickly as possible. I started going for private lessons a couple of weeks ago, but since they’re very expensive, I’d like to get a DVD that will help me learn a little faster. I figured that going for the lessons + following a DVD will help me learn much faster and more efficiently. Can anyone recommend a good ballroom dance DVD that will help me learn ballroom dancing well?
BTW- a link to the DVD would be most helpful. Thanks!

Go to http://www.dancevision.com , but the DVD syllabi aren’t themselves inexpensive, and they won’t be of that much additional help. Have patience.
