DANCERS!!–Learning to dance, where to begin?

10th April 2010

Ever since I was a child I was fascinated by dance. My older sister got to take ballet lessons and tap, but when I was old enough to do that I wasn’t allowed to. I wanted to try out for cheer as early as 4th grade, and that was a no from my parents as well. So I just gave up on the idea, and just did dance workouts in gyms or on dvds I ordered, but no REAL dancing.

Then my step sisters came along. Both of them are INCREDIBLE dancers and are on several different teams(tap, ballet, jazz, hip hop, step team and they used to cheer). Watching them dance just makes me wish even more that I could be a dancer. Thing is, despite the fact that I am an experienced musician…when it comes to actual dancing I’m a bit stiff and not really that great with rhythm. I guess I just look really mechanical and definitely not poised and pretty haha.

So I decided I want to learn to dance, even if I am 23 years old and can’t just try out for my high school teams. I currently live on a military base that is REALLY far away from other towns so it is kind of bad in terms of finding a local dance studio to attend classes. I am trying to find classes on base here but all they offer is salsa and belly dancing, or there are just classes for little kids. I am interested in ballet and hip hop, and want to do this as seriously as possible. It’s weird when you have such a drive and passion for something you can’t even do yet.

PLEASE tell me how I can learn the basics of dance and get things going. Hopefully the next time we move to another base in a year or so we will be close to a town where I can attend classes and put my skills to use! But in the meantime… please help me
EDIT: I don’t live with my sisters so they cannot help me. I live all the way on the other side of the country from them on a military base–I can’t just go move to another town, I’m stuck here until they tell me we can leave.

I’d suggest get your step sisters to teach you a few steps. If their increadible there is nothing stopping them from teaching you a few of their tricks of the trade.
I would say that the use of DvDs as your training isn’t adequete. You don’t have that instant correction that you would normally get from a teacher in front of you.
I do suggest you take up that salsa and belly dancing class. I encourage every single person to try as many styles as possible, because my studio has imbedded the belief in me that you must dance the styles you hate to improve the styles you love.

If you want to seriously improve your dancing, move and find a studio. Meanwhile enjoy salsa, it’s an amazingly fun dance. I’ve impressed a few people when I go to a party and I meet a girl who I can salsa with.

First off, kudos to you for not giving up! I think you should do exactly what you are doing: order some videos and start there. They make all kinds of basic videos that teach you fundamentals. Set you up a room in your house and start learning. When you find somewhere to take classes DO IT! you want to dance, just dance!
